From January 7th to January 9th SFU Graduate Business students from the MOT and full time MBA programs made their glorious return to the MBA games to compete in Business, Athletic and Spirit competitions against twenty other schools from across the country. We went into the games not really knowing what to expect or how we would fare but came out with a new sense of confidence and camaraderie with our fellow SFU students.
The games began with a great opening ceremony on Friday night. On the first full day of competition our marketing team presented a strong and creative case to executives at TELUS on how to become a leader in the growing tablet market while our other case team provided recommendations to yola.com a South African website consulting company. In both of the day’s academic competitions SFU won their respective groups and made it on to the finals, beating schools with vastly more experienced and practiced teams.
The success did not end with Academics, while the sprit team battled a snowstorm and the basketball team battled teams of giants. Most notably, our soccer team with an international flavour comprised of 11 players from 8 different countries dominated opponents and didn’t allow a goal through whole tournament before losing York in a shootout in the finals, despite dominating the game.
Day Two held more of the same, the business simulation team boldly played for the win with a risky strategy that didn’t payoff in the end, but was only way to go. The spirit and ultimate Frisbee teams competed hard all day encouraged by the sound of the our red Vuvuzuelas. The day was capped off by the dodgeball team pulling off seven straight wins including a decisive sweep of UBC in the quarterfinals en route to a 2nd place finish.
Our loud cheers, bright uniforms and great performances (making it to the finals in 4 of the 7 major competitions) had certainly gotten the attention of everyone at the games. During the last day I was approached on several occasions by other schools who not only gave us praise but expressed that they felt we should have won the entire competition. We had become a fan favourite and gotten SFU’s MBA program on the map.
A huge thanks to the rest of the organizing committee comprised of Tim Charles, Christie Hamel, Ken Lee, Adam MacLean, Britni Maclennan and Team Captain Kathleen Williams for all their hard work;
to Colleen Collins for providing great coaching and spirit throughout the weekend; to Jeff Nehajowich for spearheading the effort from SFU’s side and to the whole team for the great effort.
We hope that this successful return will ensure SFU’s participation for many years to come.
Come celebrate the end of the semester with you fellow Segal students. This will be a great time to meet students in the different programs!
