Director

Michael Parent | Profile

Michael Parent (MBA, Ph.D., Queen’s) is an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems in the Segal Graduate School of Business, Faculty of Business Administration, Simon Fraser University, and Director of the CIBC Centre for Corporate Governance and Risk Management.

He has published three books and nearly twenty scholarly articles on group decision-making, technology adoption by organizations, the internet, e-business, e-marketing, business education, and information technology governance.  His research has been published in Business Horizons, the Journal of Management Information Systems, the European Journal of Information Systems, Government Information Quarterly, the Journal of Strategic Information Systems, and Information & Management among others.  His current research centers around developing and implementing frameworks for governing information technology risk at the Board level.  He has taught courses in information systems strategy, enterprise risk, business case analysis and development, business communications, marketing strategy, and e-business.

Prior to becoming an academic, he worked in the high-technology industry as a marketing and product manager for over 10 years.  Prior to joining SFU, he was a faculty member at the Richard Ivey School of Business, the University of Western Ontario for six years. He was awarded the David C. Burgoyne Teaching Award and the Ivey Alumni Service Award and has been a member of university teaching honor rolls every year he was eligible.  From 2003 – 2006 he was Academic Director for SFU’s Management of Technology, Specialist MBA and Graduate Diploma in Business Administration programs.  He is currently co-academic director of the Vancouver Directors Education Program offered through the ICD Corporate Governance College, and teaches its Enterprise Risk module.  He has served as a consultant to various governments in Canada (federal and provincial) and has had international experience in Asia and Oceania.  He has been visiting professor at the University of Queensland (Australia), the Richard Ivey School of Business, Rotterdam School of Management (Erasmus University), the University of Pretoria, CEIBS (China) and Carnegie-Mellon University.  He is an Associate Member of the National Centre for Information Systems Research, The Australian National University.

Executive Director

Robert Adamson

Robert is the Executive Director of the CIBC Centre for Corporate Governance and Risk Management at the Segal Graduate School of Business where he is responsible for program development, management and research.

Robert has worked for international law firms, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and consulting firms in Canada, the United States, Southeast Asia and Europe. Most recently, Robert was the Director of the International Justice Programme at the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia. Robert also recently worked with the Shareholders Association for Research and Education (SHARE) on issues including institutional investment principles, corporate responsibility and corporate governance.

Robert’s current research addresses the regulation of risk associated with corporate activity in transnational multi-jurisdictional settings. More generally, Robert’s areas of research and work include international corporate governance, corporate regulation, risk regulation and risk management.

Robert received a BA(Hons.) from McGill University, an LL.B. from the Faculty of Law University of British Columbia and a Masters of Laws (LL.M.) from the London School of Economics (LSE). Robert has also studied at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen as part of the Erasmus Programme in Public and Private International Law.
